IS
VASECTOMY WORTH THE RISK?
A PHYSICIAN'S CASE AGAINST
VASECTOMANIA
H.J. Roberts, MD has reported on the
long-term complications
of elective vasectomy for over three
decades. Unfortunately, his warnings about this
"simple" operation, especially the profound
chronic immunological changes, have been largely ignored by
physicians and contraceptive counselors. As a result,
numerous healthy young men consent to vasectomy without
having been fully and properly informed of such potential
risks.
A host of other issues serve to
compound the confusion. They include the criticism of
adverse reports by concerned doctors and patients as
"anecdotal", their denial by surgeons who
infrequently follow vasectomized patients over significant
time, the flawed nature of "scientific" epidemiological
studies, and advocacy of wholesale male
sterilization by some groups.
Dr. Roberts summarizes his
institutional-neutral observations and extensive research
for the general reader. NO political, social or religious
agendas involving family planning were involved.
The CCL News commented: "We are
fortunate to have a book like this. Modern medicine has not
been geared towards following up the results of its own
procedures ... it is a vitally necessary book for anyone
contemplating vasectomy."
Amazon.com gave this book a 5-star customer rating under the
heading. "Mandatory reading for anyone considering
vasectomy." It quoted a dentist's review: "I was
impressed by the credentials of the author. I was planning
on getting a vasectomy until I read this book. The author
quotes numerous articles that discuss medical problems after
vasectomy. These include cancer, arteriosclerosis, autoimmune
diseases, allergies, etc. I personally verified several of
the references on Medline. The book is written so it can be
understood by the layperson and it includes a medical
glossary. I highly recommend it."
