We live in an obese society, so it’s important that we pay attention to our weight and make sure that it never becomes unhealthy to the point where it causes problems. In order to lose weight, people tend to turn to fad diets because they are supposed to show greater results in a smaller amount of time. The problem with fad diets is that some of them are extremely dangerous.
The Tapeworm Diet
When someone becomes obsessed with losing weight (and losing it quickly) they will turn to any measure in order to drop a few pounds. In many foreign countries, ingesting tapeworms is one of the most popular ways to lose weight.
The way the tapeworm diet works is that, after ingested, the tapeworm will start to eat the food that you eat, keeping the food and the calories from ever being digested by your body. This allows you to eat whatever you want without gaining weight.
The problem is that the tapeworm will also take the vitamins and nutrients from you too, which will keep your body from gaining any vitamins, nutrients and foods needed to remain healthy. Using tapeworms can help you lose about two pounds per week, and when you’ve reached your desired weight, you will need to take an antibiotic in order to kill the tapeworm.
Ingesting tapeworms is not a good idea, as the consequences are extremely dangerous. Using tapeworms for dieting is illegal in the United States, and for good reason. First, tapeworms can place cysts on your eyes, spinal cord, liver and brain, which could eventually lead to your death.
The Negative Calorie Diet
The Negative Calorie Diet insists that by eating foods that contain zero calories, you cannot gain weight. While it’s true that consuming zero calories will not result in weight gain, there are no foods that contain zero calories. Instead, there are certain foods that contain such a small amount of calories that simply preparing, eating and digesting these foods will force you to use more than you consume, making them zero calories.
Leafy green vegetables are the most common forms zero calorie foods, and though your diet should consists of a large quantity of leafy greens, you shouldn’t replace all foods with these items. Your body needs calories in order to keep working its normal routine and keep you healthy. Consuming calories also helps provide you with energy that you need to fight off the calories from fattening food and do simple things such as walk. If you don’t consume any calories yet continue to burn calories, you will lose weight, but you will also lose all muscle and suffer from nutritional deficiency, which can result in dizziness, shortness of breath or even fainting.
The Hollywood Diet
Since most people strive to look like one celebrity or another, it makes sense that there is a fad diet named after Hollywood. The Hollywood Diet claims that a person can lose around 10 pounds in a 48-hour time period.
Instead of eating for 48 hours, you are on a juice fast. These juices contain essential oils, minerals, vitamins, fruits and antioxidants. The purpose is to detox your body and cleanse your system, which will help achieve a normal and natural mineral balance.
The problem with the Hollywood Diet is that you are more likely to rid your body of water than you are fat. In fact, this diet really only helps to cleanse your system. It doesn’t help you lose any weight.
The Grapefruit Diet
The Grapefruit Diet is another dangerous fad. Some people believe that the grapefruit contains miracle qualities that provide you with a good source of fiber and Vitamin C while helping you to lose weight.
Basically, the way this diet is supposed to work is that you eat three meals per day, making a grapefruit the center of your diet. You are not allowed to eat between meals, and you cannot eat bread, desserts, sweet potatoes or white vegetables. Along with this, you are supposed to eat only three meals a day, and you are supposed to eat until your are uncomfortably full.
People believe that combining grapefruit with healthier foods will spark your body to start burning the fat. The problem is that you are now over serving yourself three times per day, and eating until you are full can result in diarrhea, constipation and upset stomach.
If you want to lose weight, stay away from the fad dieting and stick to what works. Watch what you eat. Try to take in less calories than you burn off. And exercise. This is the healthy way to lose weight.
