7 Tips on How to Increase Your Metabolism

If you want to boost your metabolism there are plenty of things you can do. However, you must know what those things are in order to really get your metabolism up and going and burning more calories. The following tips are easy ways to increase your resting metabolism and if you include these tips with eating right and exercising you will surely lose weight quickly and effectively.

Tip #1 – Spice it Up

Eating hot and spicy foods like cayenne and jalapeno peppers is a great way to increase your metabolism and even feel full faster. Studies show that capsaicin, which is found in cayenne and jalapeno peppers, stimulates the body to produce more adrenaline. When stress hormones like adrenaline are produced in the body your metabolism is sped up and when your metabolism speeds up you burn more calories!

Tip #2 – Get Proper Rest

You know that your body needs sleep, usually 8 hours of sleep per night. However, many people do not follow these guidelines saying they don’t have time and as a result are simply exhausted. When the body is exhausted it can’t function as it normally would, much less burn calories as it should because the body is working in a reduced capacity. So, when you do not get enough sleep your metabolism automatically slows down. If you want to truly rev your metabolism up then you will get enough sleep every night so your body can do its job.

Tip #3 – Reduce Stress

Everybody gets stressed out from time to time, that is just a normal part of life. However, those individuals who live at an increased stress level are at a higher risk for many health issues, including a slow metabolism. In fact, when there are high levels of stress the body begins increasing the size of abdominal fat cells and creating more, in addition to encouraging the body to store more fat in this area of the body. So, if you are stressed out considerably then you might just be putting yourself at risk to gain weight. If you want to truly increase your metabolic rate then relax and get rid of the stress. Deep breathing, exercising, massage and eating right can help you cut the stress in your life and ultimately increase your metabolism.

Tip #4 – Work Out With Weights

Working out with weights is a great way to build muscle and when you build muscle you increase your resting metabolic rate. In fact, a pound of muscle burns significantly more calories than a pound of fat does, so head to the gym and start pumping some iron. Not only will you build muscle, get in shape, and fight heart disease, high cholesterol, and other problems, but you will also increase your resting metabolism and that is really worthwhile.

Tip #5 – Don’t Cut Too Many Calories

Many people want to lose weight as fast as possible and they mistakenly think that if they cut half of their usual calories from their diet then they will be able to lose the weight they want quicker. However, the truth of the matter is that when you cut calories from your diet in such a way as dropping from 2,000 calories to 1,000 calories overnight your body will slow your metabolism down because it believes your body is starving and needs to make the most of the calories being consumed. So, when you cut calories you are actually slowing your metabolism down rather than revving it up.

Tip #6 – Eat More Protein

Interestingly, when you eat more protein your metabolism increases all on its own and you are likely to burn more than an additional 200 calories per day simply by eating extra protein. This is because the amino acids that make up protein are difficult for the body to breakdown, which results in the body working harder to breakdown the protein and the metabolism increasing as a result. You don’t have to be on an all protein fad diet either to get this benefit. Simply include more protein in your diet, from 10-30%, and you will recognize that your metabolism increases.

Tip #7 – Eat Breakfast

You have probably heard that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and if you want to lose weight then it really is. When you go to sleep at night your metabolism slows down and the only way to rev it up again is to eat. So, if you eat breakfast you get your metabolism revving again quickly as opposed to waiting ’til lunch. Start including a healthy breakfast of grains and proteins and you will see that breakfast truly is the most important meal of the day and will have a higher metabolism as a result!
There are many things you can do to increase your metabolism and these are just a few suggestions to help you along. By incorporating these tips in your daily lifestyle as well as making good food choices and exercising on a regular basis you will find that your metabolism revs up significantly and helps you drop the pounds even when you are resting.
